Geoscience is the study of the Earth and its systems. Geoscientists are a diverse group of professionals that include exploration and mining geologists, geophysicists, geochemists, petroleum geologists, hydrogeologists, terrain and coastal geomorphologists and environmental geoscientists.
The Geological Survey of Canada (GSC) is Canada's premier agency for geoscientific information and research. Geoscientists conduct research in collaboration with territorial governments and the GSC. This research includes bedrock and surficial mapping, geochemical and geophysical surveys, mineral and placer deposit studies, environmental studies and investigation of reclamation methods. Geoscience information is then used in mineral exploration, mineral resource and environmental assessment, and land use planning. This information is also used to steer mining investment and the technical knowledge helps the mining industry, other government departments, First Nations, schools and the general public.
