Indian and Northern Affairs Canada
Symbol of the Government of Canada

The Government of Canada is committed to working with First Nations and all partners to improve the quality of life of First Nations people in Canada. As part of this commitment, Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) will be introducing a Secure Certificate of Indian Status (SCIS), commonly referred to as the Status card.

The Secure Status card will be a credible identity document that meets the needs of Status Indians. Service providers will also appreciate the secure Status card's modern security features that provide better protection from the abuses of fraud and identity theft.

Currently, there are three VALID types of Status cards in circulation. After the new card is launched, your current Status card will continue to be valid until it reaches its renewal date.
