Indian and Northern Affairs Canada
Symbol of the Government of Canada

The Minister for Indian and Northern Affairs also serves as the Federal Interlocutor for Métis and Non-Status Indians. The Federal Interlocutor helps to find practical ways to improve federal programs and services for Métis, Non-Status Indians and urban Aboriginal people. In support of this goal, the Office of the Federal Interlocutor is responsible for:

  • maintaining and strengthening the Government of Canada's relationship with national Aboriginal organizations that represent Métis, Non-Status Indians and urban Aboriginal people, including the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples  and the Métis National Council;
  • participating in negotiation processes with these organizations and the provinces; and
  • coordinating the government's Urban Aboriginal Strategy.

These activities support the vision and mandate of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada, and help to strengthen the relationship between the Government of Canada and Aboriginal peoples.

The Federal Interlocutor also implements the Urban Aboriginal Strategy - an approach based on problem-solving partnerships with provincial governments, urban Aboriginal organizations, municipalities and other federal departments.
